Chiropractic is a drug and surgery free form of treatment concerned with the diagnosis, management and prevention of mechanical conditions of the musculoskeletal system; this includes the effects on the ability of the nervous system to control and coordinate the body in a response to changing environmental conditions.  It is based on the  premise that the body can respond appropriately to its environment provided that the nervous system is free of interference.

Chiropractors focus on the detection and correction of aberrant spinal function and its subsequent effect on how the nervous system controls and coordinates the body in response to  various environment.

What to expect for your first consultation:
Please allow 30-45 minutes for your first consultation and aim to arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time to fill out necessary forms.

We will first start with a discussion about you, your health and the reason for your visit.

As a part of your care we need to ensure that Chiropractic is appropriate for you and we need to establish your over all health picture.

To do this we will ask for in depth information about your current condition and about your past health history. Some questions may seem irrelevant, but they can be important for the practitioner to build an accurate health picture.

A thorough examination is performed that includes a postural analysis, a specific neurological and orthopaedic examination, along with hands on palpation to ascertain  the nature of your condition.

If there are no contraindications to spinal manipulative therapy and your condition is suitable for Chiropractic care, with your consent, a treatment plan is tailored for you and then we may start treatment on your first visit. If your presentation is such that imaging is deemed necessary then you may be referred for x-ray or to your GP for CT or MRI referral before being treated.  In many cases though, treatment can be commenced on this first visit.

If during the history and examination chiropractic care appears not to be appropriate for you, we may refer you to your GP or other practitioner.

After a first ever treatment it is common to feel a bit sore, this usually settles down in the first 24 hours. If your condition is long standing it can take several visits over a period of weeks to see significant progress although small improvements may be discernible from the first visit.
